2011’s list of the year’s 10 best-selling cars didn’t see much movement at the top since last year, but Ford (NYSE:F[1]) came out the clear winner after a shake-up in the middle.
The top three looked just like they did in 2010. Trucks took gold and silver, with the Ford F-Series at 584,917 and the Chevrolet Silverado at 415,130 — both up in double digits from last year. The Toyota (NYSE:TM[2]) Camry remained on the podium with 308,510, but that represented a 6% drop from 2010, affected mostly by the March earthquake and tsunami that wreaked havoc for Japanese automakers.
Particularly hard-hit were the two Japanese majors, Toyota and Honda (NYSE:HMC[3]), who watched their respective Corolla and Accord slide down the list, and Honda’s Civic and CR-V dropped out of the top 10 altogether. Toyota also had the dubious distinction of putting out one of the five worst-selling cars of 2011[4].
Reaping the benefits was Ford, with its Escape SUV — which was on the outside looking in for 2010 — finishing fifth and its Fusion jumping to sixth. Japanese also-ran Nissan (PINK:NSANY[5]) gained ground, with its Altima jumping from seventh to fourth.
In addition to the Silverado, General Motors (NYSE:GM[6]) landed a new vehicle on the list, with its Cruze compact car bottoming out the top 10.
The North American Car of the Year[7], the Hyundai Elantra, was unable to crack the list but saw sales spike 41% to 186,361 in 2011.
The complete top 10 list is as follows:
