Here’s an Apple rumors[1] special on the iPad 3: [2]
“We have something you really have to see. And touch,” reads the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL[3]) invitation to a March 7 product event. According to Bloomberg[4], the world’s most valuable company will debut its third generation tablet in San Francisco Wednesday of next week.
The iPad 3 is slated to host a bounty of new features[5] — including HD display, notably augmented processing speed[6], and improved compatibility with high-speed wireless networks. The iPad’s display has also been renovated; iPad 3 boasts greater pixel density than some currently marketed HD televisions, and additional graphics processing will render video streaming near instantaneous.
The iPad 3 release is expected to contend mounting pressure from Apple’s running competitors in both the tablet and smartphone markets. The sudden but theatrical iPad 3 debut may divert market attention from competing products running Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG[7]) Android software. In the wake of its debut over the holiday season, the iPad 3 may also siphon away sales of Amazon‘s (NASDAQ:AMZN[8]) Kindle Fire.
Apple has been particularly quick to render the iPad 3 compatible with wireless long-term evolution, or LTE, standards. Both Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ[9]) and AT&T (NYSE:T[10]) are introducing fast-data LTE networks; Nokia (NYSE:NOK[11]) and Motorola (NYSE:MMI[12]) already produce phones compatible with LTE networks. However, Apple’s iPad 3 is the first ever LTE-compatible tablet.
Once product launch was officially announced, Apple’s market value bounced — with shares climbing 1.6 percent to $534.20 at 1:05 EST. The stock has risen 32 percent overall this year.
