One of the big beneficiaries of the mobile boom has been Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM). During the past six months, the stock is up over 30%. Helping is the fact that Qualcomm is a key supplier to the ever-growing Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL).
To keep up its success, Qualcomm is launching its next-generation Wi-Fi wireless networking technology through its Atheros line, part of a $3.1 billion acquisition a year ago.
What can we expect? As should be no surprise, the new 802.11ac system is a speed demon, between two to three times faster than current technologies. The chips also are designed for low power consumption, helping battery life — this should especially help expand the use of mobile video, which usually is a drag on mobile devices’ power.
While Qualcomm’s chips likely won’t hit the market until the end of this year, they should be worth the wait.
