Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL[1] news items for today.

Apple Announces New Operating System—Mountain Lion: Now that Mac users have finally gotten their computers to properly run 2011’s version of OS X, 10.7, otherwise known as Lion, Apple is ready to spring OS 10.8 on them. The new operating system, known as Mountain Lion, was announced in a press release on Thursday and began public testing by app developers the same day. Among the myriad features announced for the new operating system are improved support for Apple’s iCloud cloud storage service, iMessage, Notification Center, and Game Center, all of which bring the functionality of Apple’s Mac computers closer to that of its mobile devices, like the iPhone. Most interesting among the new features, however, is Mountain Lion’s integration of Twitter. Mountain Lion users will be able to use Twitter directly through a number of apps in the operating system, and Apple has even built in new features, like the “Tweet Sheet,” which lets you grab things directly from your computer (pictures, etc.) and tweet them through the system’s new Share menu.

iPad Pulled from Amazon China: The ongoing saga of the iPad’s legal challenges in China continued. The latest development saw Apple pull its tablet from Chinese websites on Thursday, looking to mitigate complaints that Apple was selling the device through unauthorized vendors in the country. Among those unauthorized vendors, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal, was online retailer Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN[2]). Apple claimed that the move was not related to its ongoing dispute with Proview, which has sued to prevent Apple from using the iPad name, but the timing of the decision seems to be more than a coincidence, to say the least. Siding with Proview, Chinese authorities began removing iPads from retail outlets in the country on Monday.

Intel Ivy Bridge Processors Not Widely Available Until After Second Quarter: A Wednesday report in Digitimes (via Mac Rumors) said that Intel‘s (NASDAQ:INTC[3]) new Ivy Bride processors will not be widely available until “after June.” This news is troubling for some Mac users as Ivy Bridge is expected to be the processor powering Apple’s rumored new MacBook Pro laptops. These updated, high-end machines will feature the same ultra-thin form factor as Apple’s popular MacBook Air laptops.
