Online restaurant reservation site OpenTable (NASDAQ:OPEN) recently announced the 2012 Diners’ Choice Award Winners for Top 100 Hot Spot Restaurants in the United States, which highlights “hip new restaurants, celebrity chefs and avant-garde restaurateurs.” However, some of those states are a little more crowded than others.
More than 5 million OpenTable user reviews for over 12,000 restaurants were used to compile the list, which spans all 50 states and the District of Columbia. California (25) led the list, followed by New York (20), Florida (15), Illinois (11), Nevada (7), Texas (6), Georgia (3) and Tennessee (2). Also, Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon and the District of Columbia each landed a restaurant on the list.
The map shows the geographical breakdown of “hotness,” with the East Coast having a fairly diverse smattering of hip restaurants, with concentrated clusters throughout.
Sadly, it looks like if you’re eating off-continent or in the Mountain West, OpenTable users think you’re behind the times.
