Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, infamous star of MTV’s “Jersey Shore”, is pregnant. Gasp! What’s more, about a month ago she lied about her pregnancy on “Good Morning America” so that MTV and parent company Viacom (NASDAQ:VIAB) could snag a few baby-related business deals before the mainstream media got a hold of the story.
Now that the cat’s out of the bag, everyone from big-name news broadcasters to celebrity gossip bloggers and modest investing advice websites (indeed) have picked up the beans spilled by the tiny troublemaker. However, while MTV’s plan for an exclusive celebrity magazine baby scoop has been foiled, the “situation” can be salvaged by pushing out “Snooki” emblazoned baby clothes, strollers and toys to rest of the world — as if you didn’t already have enough Snooki in your life.
Why is this important? Last year’s season premiere of “Jersey Shore” drew 8.45 million viewers, making it MTV’s highest rated series ever. Considering this series is even larger than iconic MTV shows like “Beavis and Butthead” and “TRL”, you can imagine how delicately the network wants to handle this new development. Snooki and co-star Jennifer “JWoww” Farley (are we seriously calling her a co-star?) are set to do a spinoff of “Jersey Shore” sometime the future. How MTV blends Snooki’s raging party attitude and motherhood will be key.
