iPad Predicted to Replace Desktop Computing: The New York Times reports that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Tim Cook made a recent prediction that tablet computers may one day replace PCs. Cook’s prediction has backing from market analysts and tech industry veterans, many of whom recognize the meteoric rise in tablet purchases against the declining reliance on traditional PCs. While Apple is not alone in a field populated with rising contenders like Amazon‘s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle, the iPad remains the most popular tablet computer in a rapidly growing market — accounting for 9.5$ billion, or a clean 20%, of AAPL’s revenue during the holiday quarter. Tablet sales are gradually eclipsing those of PCs; PCs outsold tablets by 20 to 1 in 2010, the year of the iPad’s introduction. However, that margin had narrowed drastically by 2011, with PCs only outselling tablets by a ratio of 6 to 1. Features that had previously been confined to PCs are fast migrating to tablets, and with the iPad’s increasing sophistication, we may be looking at the twilight of desktop computers.

Android and iPhone Reach 91% OS Market Share: According to EON, the Android and iOS operating systems occupy an overwhelming 91% of the mobile OS market. Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android stands as the smartphone giant, currently holding a vast 58.8% of the market, with the iPhone recently climbing to a respectable 32.2% share. RIM‘s (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry smartphone is slipping rapidly, occupying only 6.7% of the smartphone market as of February.

iPad Use Rising Among Small Business: According to eWeek.com, iPad use among small business has skyrocketed over the past year — with 34% employing Apple’s tablet by the close of 2011, as opposed to the 9% figure from 2010. These figures indicate that the iPad is now the fastest growing handheld device in terms of use by SMBs. Smooth iPhone and iPad cloud computing integration has made these devices especially useful for small business, who have come to rely on the accessibility of the cloud to cut costs and bolster efficiency.
