MacBook Unity. What’s the difference between a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air? Very soon, apparently, the answer will be: very little, at least in terms of their trim appearance and light weight. Apple Insider, which has been reporting on the likely features of Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) upcoming MacBook Pro, noted this week that Apple is about to start production of a 15-inch model that will hew closely to the design of the MacBook Air. Initial monthly shipments, Digitimes says, are expected to be in the 200,000-unit range, with an even slimmer, 13-inch version set for production in June. Monthly shipments for that machine are expected to be in the 300,000 to 400,000 range. The likely hardware: quad-core configurations of Intel’s Ivy Bridge next-generation chips, which include the Core i7-3720QM and Core i7-3820QM, featuring Intel‘s (NASDAQ:INTC) HD 4000 integrated graphics.

Gearing up for the iPhone 5. While the timing of the iPhone 5’s unveiling is still up for debate, one indication that the device is nearing production comes from a TV Tokyo World Business Satellite interview with a man — purported to be a Foxconn recruiter — who tells the news service that the company is hiring 18,000 workers as it gears up for iPhone 5 production. MacRumors spotted the story in a squib by website Makotakara. Speaking near a Foxconn factory in the suburbs of Taiyuan, China, the recruiter says the device is scheduled to launch in June, although because that would be relatively soon after the iPhone 4S release, Apple observers speculate that the actual release will be sometime in the fall.

Want Your iPhone Unlocked? Just Ask Tim. We suspect Apple’s Tim Cook is a busy guy, what with running Apple and everything. But as was the case with Steve Jobs, there have been reports that Apple customers who email the CEO do sometimes get a response. Or at least an indication that someone in his office is reading the email. An example: some iPhone users whose subscriber contracts with AT&T (NYSE:T) have run their course have emailed requests to Cook asking him to authoroize AT&T to unlock their phones so they can be use with other carriers (often in other countries). According to 9to5 Mac, about six such requests have been granted so far using the email-to-Cook method. AT&T is known to otherwise refuse unlocking requests when they’re made directly by customers.
