daily apple rumors AAPL[1]Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL[2] news items for today:

iPad Mini Rumors Sweep China. China is buzzing with speculation[3] that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL[2]) is developing a smaller version of the iPad, according to Kotaku. The website cites sources saying the mini-iPad will be released in the third quarter of this year, priced between $249 and $299. Kotaku speculated that the mini-iPad would be positioned to compete with a number of Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT[4]) Windows-based tablets expected to appear later this year. MacRumors points out that rumors of a smaller iPad[5] have been circulating for some time. John Gruber has claimed that Apple developed a 7.85-inch iPad, but had no plans to market it, MacRumors noted.

New Mac Trojan infects Word documents. Apple Insider says that Kaspersky Lab expert Costin Raiu has identified a variant of “Lucky Cat” malware that uses contaminated Word documents[6] to hijack Macs. Like the Flashback Trojan that infected 600,000 Macs earlier this month[7], this new malware exploits a flaw in Java code to infect Macs. Apple Insider noted the new Trojan remained undetected for six weeks before it activated and stole information from an infected Mac. Apple Insider said new variants of the Trojan were expected to appear in the coming weeks.

New iPad to be available in 56 countries by month’s end. Apple will launch its latest-generation iPad in more than a score of new countries over the next two weeks, bringing the new iPad to consumers in 56 nations by the end of April[8], AllThingsD reports. On April 20, the new iPad will hit South Korea, Brunei, Croatia, Cyprus, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Malaysia, Panama, St. Marten, Uruguay and Venezuela. One week later, it will debut in Colombia, Estonia, India, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, South Africa and Thailand. AllThingsD notes that this eclipses the rollout for iPad 2, which shipped to a mere 39 countries within five weeks of launch.
