Steve Jobs Considered Ad-Supported OS: The late Steve Jobs was the driving force behind a 2009 Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL[3]) patent for an advertising-supported operating system[4], MacRumors says. It notes that the idea dated back to the 1999 release of Mac OS 9, as reported in Ken Segall’s book Insanely Simple: The Obsession that Drives Apple’s Success. Why the company never implemented the idea and waited until 2009 to obtain a patent, remains unclear, MacRumors says.

iPad Attracting First-Time Apple Customers: NPD Group finds that roughly 25% of buyers of iPads are entirely new consumers[5] of Apple products, Apple Insider says. It also notes that the research firm also found that 33% of U.S. households own Apple products. While the iPod was the traditional gateway to Apple products for consumers, NPD found that iPhones and iPads were supplanting the iPod in that role, as sales of the MP3 device decline relative to other products, Apple Insider says. About 60% of households that owned an Apple product also own a PC running Microsoft‘s (NASDAQ:MSFT[6]) Windows, Apple Insider notes.

Privacy Concerns Shape New Apple Employee Cafeteria: Workers at Apple’s Cupertino offices will soon have another company-owned venue[7] for dining, according to the Mercury News. The company has received approval from the local planning commission to construct a two-story, fully enclosed, 21,468-square-foot cafeteria not far from its headquarters complex. Apple officials told the planning commission that the company didn’t want its employees to worry that competitors were listening in to their table talk, so the new two-story facility will be restricted to Apple employees only, unlike other Apple venues that permit employees to bring in visitors, the Mercury News says.
