5 Restaurant Chains That Put ‘Gluten-Free’ on the Menu

An increased awareness of celiac disease and other health concerns have helped popularize gluten-free diets. Today, more and more restaurants are including menu items that don’t contain rye, barley or wheat — the three sources of gluten, Nation’s Restaurant News[1] reports.

Domino’s Pizza (NYSE:DPZ[2]) is one of the largest chains to offer gluten-free options, however it’s new crust is under fire[3] from The North American Society for the Study of Celiac Disease.

Here’s a snapshot of five restaurant chains that offer some version gluten-free items.

Chevys Fresh Mex: Chevys[4] offers several gluten-free options and trains its staff on proper techniques to prepare and serve gluten-free items.

Domino’s Pizza: Domino’s[5] makes it’s gluten-free crust from a combination of potato starch, rice starch and rice flour. However, the chain has been up front about the fact that cross-contamination is a risk. It does not recommend that people with celiac disease eat the gluten-free crust.

Chuck E. Cheese’s: CEC Entertainment‘s (NYSE:CEC[6]) Chuck E. Cheese[7] is testing gluten-free pizza and cupcakes[8] in six Minnesota restaurants. These items are made in gluten-free facilities.

Fresh Brothers: Fresh Brothers[9], a California pizza chain, introduced a gluten-free menu in 2008. The chain takes special precautions to avoid cross-contamination, although it’s gluten-free pizzas are baked in the same ovens as those with gluten.

P.F. Chang’s China Bistro: Chinese chain P.F. Chang’s[10] (NASDAQ:PFCB[11]) serves a variety of gluten-free dishes and sauce choices. The gluten-free items are not prepared with appliances used to make or serve foods with gluten.
