Drink Coffee, Live Longer … Maybe

The news keeps getting more delicious[1] for coffee lovers. Fans now have yet another excuse to run to the nearest Starbucks NASDAQ:(SBUX)[2] or any other java shop for a shot of espresso or a mug of decaf.

A new study conducted by researchers from the National Cancer Institute suggests daily coffee drinkers may live longer[3] than non-coffee drinkers. Researchers aren’t sure why coffee can be beneficial, but the study published in the New England Journal of Medicine[4] found that men who drank 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day had a 10% chance of living longer then men who abstained from coffee. The advantage was even greater for coffee-guzzling women. They had a 13% chance of living longer than women who avoided the beverage.

This is good news for coffee drinkers who have been told for eons that their consumption of the rich roasted beverage could result in a variety of maladies from stunted growth to cancer.

However, those behind the studies are clear they aren’t touting java as a wonder potion.

Neal Freedman, the lead study author and an investigator at the NCI’s Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics told Bloomberg that coffee “doesn’t seem to increase one’s risk of dying.” But, he also said “the association between coffee and mortality has been unclear. This is an observational study so we don’t know for certain coffee is having a cause and effect.”

According to Freedman, there are more than 1,000 compounds of coffee that may affect health and there should be many more studies conducted on those compounds and their impact on the human body.
