Popular singer Lady Gaga, who specializes in outrageous conduct, provoked some backlash from Thai fans with a Twitter comment.
Currently moving through the Asian leg of her “The Born This Way Ball” tour, Lady Gaga tweeted that she was looking forward to her visit to Bangkok so she could buy a fake Rolex, the Associated Press reported.
That remark didn’t sit well with many Thais, which considered it a slur on their nation’s reputation.
Protests by Islamic fundamentalists in Indonesia have threatened to cancel some shows. The singer has also irritated Christian leaders in South Korea and the Philippines.
On Wednesday evening, the singer tweeted: “I just landed in Bangkok baby! Ready for 50,000 screaming Thai monsters. I wanna get lost in a lady market and buy fake Rolex.”
While some Thai fans expressed disapproval over the comment, most didn’t seem to care. Fans mobbed the airport when she landed and surrounded her hotel, requesting autographs and screaming in apparent joy at her visit.
Fans have also been waiting for days outside the stadium where she is scheduled to perform.
Lady Gaga has 24 million followers on Twitter.
