This week’s controversial cover of Time Magazine stirs up reminders of a few other eye-popping covers that stood out on store shelves during the past 30 years. Here’s a look at five covers that have sent tongues wagging.
A nude — well she did fashion a “handbra” — photo of a very pregnant Demi Moore on the cover of Vanity Fair was a shocker in 1991. However, the cover inspired an ongoing trend. Jessica Simpson, Halle Berry and other celebrities have been photographed in similar poses since Moore’s cover published. Even moms who aren’t celebrities now hire professional photographers to take similar shots — but most do wear a little more than Moore wore.
Stirring up controversy is something that Kanye West does very well. So when he does something seemingly outlandish, no one is really surprised. But many people let out gasps of disgust when they saw him imitating Jesus for the cover of Rolling Stone in 2006. Unlike the picture of Demi, Kanye’s photo shoot did not inspire trends.
When Newsweek published a cover with Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann looking — well … freaky — both Democrats and Republicans condemned the magazine’s photo choice. Many suspected that Newsweek designers had even distorted the image. But even if they didn’t, the photo was still poorly selected. The photo of Bachmann, who’s usually quite photogenic, was obviously snapped at an inopportune moment. There were probably several more flattering options that Newsweek could have chosen.
Janet Jackson was still widely thought of as the innocent girl-next-door when she appeared topless on the cover of Rolling Stone for the article The Joy of Sex. Even though Jackson was sans a blouse, her breasts were mostly hidden by a pair of male hands. The hands belonged to her then-husband, Rene Elizondo.
There’s not much to say about this photo of a naked John Lennon curled around wife Yoko Ono. Despite the love on his face and the artistic quality of the shot, the cover from 1981 is simply creepy.
