The company says its existing fee of $45 for bags registered at the gate will rise to as much as $100 in November.
A Spirit spokesperson told CNN Money that the fee hike was meant to encourage customers to register and pay for carry-on luggage prior to reaching the check-in gate. Fewer people registering their bags at the gate would lower boarding delays for other customers, the airline said.
However, carry-on bag fees paid at the company’s airport kiosks will also rise, jumping from $40 now to $50 in November.
Spirit Airline is no stranger to controversy. It’s currently facing calls for a boycott on Facebook over its decision not to refund a ticket purchased by a dying Vietnam veteran.
