Australian optometrist, Andrew Hogan claims the trendy asymmetrical haircut made popular by Justin Bieber could cause amblyopia, also known as “lazy eye.” Long fringes of hair that cover one eye is a trademark of the hairstyle that’s extremely popular among the emo crowd.
When the nerve pathway from one eye to the brain does not develop properly, amlyopia could occur. Hogan told the Australian Daily Telegraph vision obstructed by hair or other objects could lead to this phenomenon.
“If a young emo chap has a fringe covering one eye all the time, that eye won’t see a lot of detail,” Hogan said. “And if it happens from a young age, that eye can become amblyotic.”
Hogan’s theory isn’t making it into medical digests just yet. Auckland-based ophthalmologist Justin Mora finds the claims laughable.
“This is a crazy idea, the concept of this blocking vision and causing problems with sight,” Mora told TVNZ. “It’s just silly.”
