Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for Wednesday.
30.7% of U.S. Smartphones are iPhones: Data released by comScore (NASDAQ:SCOR) shows that Apple‘s (NASDAQ:APPL) iPhones increased their share of the U.S. smartphone market, rising from 29.6% at the end of last year to 30.7% at the end of March. Smartphones using Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android OS held 51% of the U.S. smartphone market in March, up from 47.3% in December, comScore said. Samsung was ranked top mobile device manufacturer, with 26% of the U.S. mobile device market, followed by LG at 19.3% and Apple at 14%, according to comScore.
TSMC Increases 20nm Chip Production in Anticipation of Apple Orders: Manufacturing of 20nm processors is being accelerated at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (NYSE:TSM) leading to industry speculation that the company is expecting Apple to place orders for the chips, DigiTimes reports. TSMC is currently struggling to meet demand for its 28nm chips, and the investment in the 20nm chip line suggests that it’s making early preparations to ensure that it can fully supply a new customer, likely Apple, unnamed sources told DigiTimes. Currently, Apple uses 45nm chips manufactured by Samsung, but is likely to seek other sources for chips as mobile device competition with the Korean electronics giant heats up.
Apple and Dropbox Collaborate on Rejected Apps: After a number of apps based on the Dropbox development kit were rejected from the App Store, Dropbox and Apple are working together to resolve the issue, CNET reports. Developers had been voicing irritation over the rejections on online forums. The problem appears to stem from links inside the apps that permit users to create Dropbox accounts, which fall afoul of App Store rules against external purchasing without an in-app option, CNET said.
