The company has removed the words “doesn’t get PC viruses” from the pages touting the advantages of Macs over PCs running Microsoft‘s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows on its website, Wired notes.
For a long time, Macs accounted for such a small percentage of personal computers that hackers didn’t bother designing malware to infect them.
However, as the company’s fortunes have grown in recent years, that has changed. In April, software security experts identified Flashback, a Trojan virus that affected up to 600,000 Macs online, exploiting a security flaw in Java.
Apple has taken the change of events into account. Instead of denying the possibility of malware infection, the Mac marketing page now promotes the “built-in defenses” of OS X that prevent users from “unknowingly downloading malicious software” on their Macs.
A computer security adviser told Wired that after the Flashback incident, Apple’s lawyers probably objected to continuing to claim that Macs were safe from potential malware infections.
