Fortune: Best Places to Retire

Many seniors are saying no to Florida and yes to New York City

Today’s retirees don’t closely resemble those of previous generations. Many of the 78 million baby boomers set to retire are healthy, active and making plans to return to school, travel oversees or take on a new job, Fortune  says in its new report The best places to retire now.

Retirement Consultant Maria Dwight told Fortune that boomers aren’t necessarily looking for retirement spots known for shuffleboard, beaches and golf courses. They’re more interested in locales with biking trails and opportunities for educational and cultural enrichment. “Retirees today are looking at it with a sense of adventure as opposed to a sense of inevitability,” Dwight said.

Here’s a look at five of the 20 destinations that Fortune thinks are perfect for this generation of retirees.

Sunny Climates

Santa Fe, N.M: This cultured city sees 325 sunny days each year. With its close proximity to mountains, award-winning restaurants and an internationally renowned opera, Santa Fe is attractive to many boomers.

Small Cities

Charleston, S.C.: Small cities offer the best of both worlds for those who desire a slower-paced lifestyle with the amenities offered at bustling locales. And for retirees who want to return to school, Charleston University offers several almost-free (there’s a $25 registration fee) classes for senior citizens aged 60 and older.

Mountain Towns

Bend, Ore.: Retirees looking for a relaxed atmosphere and a plethora of outdoor activities are likely to adore Bend, Ore.  Bend has some of the best hiking and bike trails in the country. It’s also a hotspot for mountain climbers and beer enthusiasts.

Big Cities

New York City: The Big Apple is loaded with culture, entertainment and opportunity. Cars aren’t needed, and the many seniors will appreciate the apartment living lifestyle the city offers.

Overseas

Cuenca, Ecuador: Overseas retirement has become increasingly popular. Cuenca is a prime destination for those looking for a mild climate, refined architecture, modern health care and inexpensive homes.
