[1]The tablet market has been extremely tough to crack. Even after a couple years, Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL[2]) iPad remains the dominant device. Yet competition is getting more intense. And the latest entrant in the market is Google (NASDAQ:GOOG[3]).

At the company’s popular I/O conference today, it will announce[4] an Android-based tablet. Built by Taiwan’s Asustek, the device will actually gun for the low end market. So far, Amazon‘s (NASDAQ:AMZN[5]) Kindle Fire has been the leading player in that segment.

The Google tablet — called the Nexus 7 — will have a seven-inch display and allow for 720-pixel HD video. But it won’t have a rear-facing camera.

The cost? It looks like the Nexus 7 will have a price tag between $199 to $249 (depending the memory). What’s more, the device will be available on the Google Play Store. So far, it looks like there will be no distribution at retail stores of mobile carriers.
