Founded about 10 years ago, Vizio is now the leader in the U.S. for LCD HDTVs. To find more growth, the company is moving into the laptop and desktop computer market.
It’s a bold move with the industry suffering, as seen with laggards such as Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ) and Dell (NASDAQ:DELL).
For the most part, Vizio is focusing on high-quality offerings that have low price points. For example, they have connections to HDMI ports, which means the computers can be used as home-entertainment systems. Prices will start $898.
In terms of distribution, Vizio has struck deals with retailers such as Costco (NASDAQ:COST), Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) and Target (NYSE:TGT). Of course, the units will also be on Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN).
The big issue for Vizio is that the traditional computer market is undergoing a major shift as consumers and businesses move toward tablets — especially Apple‘s (NASDAQ:APPL) iPads. Besides, the company’s offerings aren’t necessarily must-haves. So it may be tough for Visio to get much traction.
