Angry Birds Maker Launches New Game

[1]Rovio has made a fortune from its mega-hit, Angry Birds, but so far, that has made Rovio a one-hit — albeit very successful — wonder.

However, the company finally looks like it might be ready to break out of its monotony, and has launched a new title: Amazing Alex.

So far, the game is available on Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL[2]) iPhone and iPad, and there’s also a version for Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG[3]) Android.

The concept of the game is fairly straightforward: It’s a puzzle game based on physics, in which you use ordinary objects to create chain reactions that accomplish various tasks. The game also includes a level-building feature, and personalized stages can be shared with friends.

The release of the game — successful or not — is a good step for Rovio.

The company’s no slouch, turning about $62 million in profit from the $100 million that Angry Birds brought in last year.

However, if Rovio wants to come public — the buzz is that a deal would come in 2013 — it will need to prove it can move beyond Angry Birds. And the only way to have another hit game is to … well, release another game. Amazing Alex is at least a first step.
