AT&T Ready to Charge for FaceTime?

As data usage soars, the telecom giant is likely to hike prices

iPhone630 300x227 AT&T Ready to Charge for FaceTime? Over the past couple years, video has become an increasingly popular activity for smartphone users. But there’s a problem: It’s expensive for the mobile carriers.

Verizon (NYSE:VZ) has hiked its own pricing plans for data usage. And while there have been complaints, the move has not resulted in much attrition.

Now, it looks like AT&T (NYSE:T) will soon announce its own new pricing plan to deal with the situation.

Evidence of this has come from the pre-release version of Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) operating system. That is, there is no way to access the FaceTime app on the AT&T network, so it seems logical that it probably will become a premium feature.

The only major mobile carrier with a no-limit data plan is Sprint (NYSE:S), which has been touting this in its marketing. But the company’s financials are shaky and it does not have the broad product line of its rivals, so whether the company can continue its cheaper rates isn’t certain.
