Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) has added expanded the range of icons available for wedding announcements to include representations of same-sex couples. Two new sets of marriage icons — one showing two grooms and the other showing two brides — join the existing bride and groom “cake topper” icon.
Representatives of gay advocacy organizations hailed the new icons as a further step in expressing the normality of gay relationships and allowing gay people to share their special experiences with friends and family, the Los Angeles Times notes.
The social networking website already allows users to indicate their inclusion in same-sex relationships with profile options that include civil unions and domestic partnerships.
Company officials said the new icons were adde over the weekend. In fact, they debuted on the wedding announcement of Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, who wed longtime partner Sean Eldridge.
Shares of Facebook closed up about 1.4% in Tuesday’s abbreviated trading.
