Nugget Nightmare: Woman Accidentally Cooks $15,000

Husband had hidden a good chunk of change in the oven

When a woman in Sydney went to cook some chicken nuggets for her two daughters, something happened that put a bit of a damper on dinner: A large sum of money went up in smoke.

Her husband had hidden $15,000 worth of cash — money he got from selling his Toyota (NYSE:TM) sports car — in the oven. He though it would be safe in the oven because “his wife never used it.

Except for that night, apparently.

The man was in need of the extra cash because of his roofing business had been slow, and he needed to pay his mortgage. He now says he has nothing to his name.

He immediately went to the bank to try to deposit the melted money, but was turned away. Soon after, though, the bank apologized and is now doing whatever it can to help the family.

The policy of the Reserve Bank of Australia is that, generally, the value is paid in proportion with how much of the bill is remaining, unless less that 20% of it is missing, in which the full value is paid.
