Sesame seeds might not be known as one of the top allergens in the U.S. today, but researchers have found that the number of sesame seed allergy cases are rising world-wide[1].
Food industry analyst Phil Lempert recently told UPIĀ that an earlier study published in Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, named sesame allergy a ‘significant, serious and growing problem.’
Lampert says that sesame allergies in the U.S. may be on the rise because the ingredient is more common now than it was several decades ago.
“Today sesame is not just found on hamburger buns, but the growing popularity of hummus, falafel, granola, bread sticks, cookies, salad dressing, Asian noodles, some spices and flavorings has pushed sesame into our everyday eats,” Lempert said.
Sesame can also be found where least expected like in lipstick and hand cream.
