Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:
Changes Coming for iMacs, Mac Pros: Internal file data included in Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) recently released OS X Mountain Lion hint at upcoming versions of its iMac and Mac Pro computer lines that lack optical drives, AppleInsider notes. Apple disappointed some observers by not debuting updated iMac and Mac Pro machines at its Worldwide Developer Conference in June, but it’s widely expected to refresh the product lines either late this year or in early 2013. Mac desktop computers have come with optical drives for almost 20 years.
New Ways to Interface: Apple is developing gesture-based controls for its devices, Computer World notes. The company has filed applications for patents relating to computer interfaces that work in three dimensions, allowing users to control objects on the screen though hand and arm motion. The company may also be developing interfaces that permit users to interact with virtual environments while wearing video glasses.
Apple Easily Tops Samsung in U.S.: Documents filed in its legal battle over alleged patent infringement by Samsung reveal that, in just the U.S., Apple sold 34 million iPads in the last two years, InformationWeek notes. Those sales have resulted in $19 billion in revenue. By contrast, Samsung managed to sell 1.4 million tablets in the U.S., producing revenue of $644 million. In the smartphone arena, Apple has sold 85 million iPhones in the U.S. since 2007 — 60 million in the last two years alone — generating $50 billion in revenue. Samsung sold 21.23 million smartphones in the U.S. in the two years between June 2010 and June 2012, yielding $7.5 billion in revenue for the South Korean electronics giant.
