Homeowner Mistakenly Billed for Streetlights Over 25 Years

Over the course of 25 years, a Connecticut woman was billed nearly $6,000 for the electricity used by two streetlights[1] near her home.

Grace Edwards only recently discovered the error. She told Hartford Courant[2] that her monthly utility bill included listings for “9500 Lumen HP Sodium” and “6300 Lumen HP Sodium,” but she didn’t understand those items pertained to streetlights.

“It has no more relevance to me than any other line items on the bill,” Edwards said.

According to Edwards’ utility provider, Connecticut Light & Power (PINK:CNLTL[3]), the home’s previous owner had agreed to pay for the electricity used by the streetlights.

Edwards said she had a difficult time initially dealing with CL&P about the matter, but in the end it all worked out. She has received a reimbursement check for nearly $10,500, which includes the $5,800 she paid and interest.
