daily apple rumors AAPL[1]Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:

What’s in a Name: The smaller-screen iPad to be launched by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL[2]) in October will be officially called[3] the ‘iPad Mini,’ according to Japanese technology blog Macotakara. It will feature a 7.85-inch screen and will bear the standard iPad logo on its rear casing. Industry analysts have been batting around the name iPad Mini since rumors of the new device, aimed to challenge mini-tablets like Amazon‘s (NASDAQ:AMZN[4]) Kindle Fire, first surfaced several months ago. The iPad Mini will be unveiled at a special media event just a month after Apple debuts its next generation iPhone in September, sources say. While earlier rumors had suggested that the newest iPhone and iPad Mini would be revealed at the same media event, having two separate events helps Apple seize the media spotlight twice prior to the holiday shopping season.

Another Patent Victory Affirmed: As Apple celebrated its victory over Samsung in a California court on Friday, it also received good news from the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), which cleared it of violating three patents[5] owned by Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG[6]) Motorola Mobility, MacWorld notes. Motorola’s claims over a fourth patent were remanded to an administrative judge for more study. Motorola filed charges against Apple over the patents in late 2010. In April, a judge ruled that Apple had violated one patent, but cleared the company of infringing on the remaining three. In June, the ITC decided to review the judge’s ruling in light of industry comments. Motorola has since filed a second set of patent infringement claims against Apple.

Samsung Seeks Tablet Reprieve: In light of the patent lawsuit jury’s finding that its Galaxy Tab tablet did not infringe on an Apple design patent, Samsung has requested that the court reverse its injunction[7] against sales of the device, AppleInsider notes. The jury rejected Apple’s claim that the Tab copied the iPad’s external design, but did find that it contained software that infringed on a number of Apple patents. An injunction against Galaxy Tab sales issued earlier by the court was based solely on the design infringement claim. Samsung is also asking for damages resulting from the loss of Tab sales during the period of the injunction.
