Online auction site eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY[1]) seems to have bested rival Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN[2]) in the race to provide same-day shipping[3].
Yesterday, eBay’s new same-day shipping service, eBay Now[4], was released in a beta testing format for some of the company’s customers in San Francisco. Those invited to use the service can receive $5 same-day shipping on products from local stores, but it only works on purchases of more than $25.
It has been rumored that Amazon is also interested in providing its customers with same-day shipping. However, wanting to launch same-day shipping is a far cry from being able to provide the service without doing some damage to the company’s bottom line.
Amazon CFO Tom Szkutak said last month[5] that the company doesn’t “see a way to do same-day on a broad scale at the moment.” He did not rule out testing same-day shipping on a smaller scale.
