A porn performer in Los Angeles recently tested positive for syphilis and, as a result, a pornography trade group has called for a nationwide shutdown of filming.
The shutdown is both voluntary and temporary, but is only the tip of the iceberg. There have been at least five cases of syphilis reported in the area in the last week, so Los Angeles County public health officials have begun investigating a possible outbreak of the disease.
Preventative antibiotic shots have been ordered for performers in the trade group, and various organizations are calling for all of them — more than 1,000 — to get tested.
The incident is expected to stall the multi-billion dollar industry and has sparked the debate over whether performers should be forced to wear condoms during shoots, The Associated Press reports.
The industry taken similar action in the past when performers have tested positive for other STDs like HIV.
