The legal drama faced by the National Football League (NFL) is getting messier.
Several subsidiaries of Travelers Companies (NYSE:TRV) filed a lawsuit against the NFL Tuesday over the the thousands of claims they’ve been inundated with as a result of brain injury suits filed against the NFL, Reuters reports.
The lawsuit from Travelers comes on the heels of a lawsuit the NFL filed against about 36 subsidiaries of the insurer last week, demanding that the companies cover the costs of defending brain injury claims.
In its counter suit, Travelers says it provided coverage for the leagues merchandising unit NFL Properties and not the NFL.
“Travelers is not required to pay any defense costs of the NFL with respect to the underlying lawsuits,” Travelers said in its lawsuit.
The NFL has no plans to back off.
“Last week, the NFL filed a comprehensive lawsuit in California against 32 insurers to ensure an orderly and comprehensive determination of its insurance rights and its carriers’ obligations,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello told Reuters. “This new filing by Travelers does not alter our objectives.”
