Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:
iPad Mini May Resemble Something Else: A new smaller-screen Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad will look less like the standard-size iPad and more like a larger iPod Touch, according to 9to5Mac. The iPad Mini will feature a thinner bezel compared to the larger iPad and separate buttons to increase and decrease volume in place of the standard iPad’s rocker switch. The iPad Mini’s microphone will be located on the back of the device. A front-facing camera for videoconferencing is likely, but reports say that the new iPad Mini may not have a rear-facing camera. The iPad Mini is expected to debut later this year. Some rumors say it will be unveiled along with the next generation iPhone on September 12.
4G Coming in September: Discussions between Apple and two South Korean wireless carriers support rumors that the next generation iPhone will include Long Term Evolution (LTE) — also known as 4G — data network capability, Korea Times notes. Apple is negotiating with SK Telecom (NYSE:SKM) and KT (NYSE:KT) to bring support for their 4G networks to the new iPhone. The company’s have sent representatives to Apple’s California headquarters to complete the agreements. Asian carriers have worried the iPhone sales will lag if it does not support local LTE networks.
Jobs Burglar Confesses: The man arrested in connection with the burglary of the late Steve Jobs’ Palo Alto home says he was desperate and living out of his car, according to AppleInsider. Kariem McFarlin told police that he saw that the home was undergoing renovations and thought he could get inside. He swiped Jobs’ wallet and car keys, as well as two iMacs, three iPods, a similar number of iPads, and $60,000 in jewelry. Unfortunately for McFarlin, when he turned the Apple devices on, they connected to Apple’s servers and revealed their location, leading police directly to him. The wallet he took contained $1. Job’s widow, Laurene Powell, has been living in a nearby residence while the home is renovated.
