[1]Here are your Apple rumors[2] and AAPL news items for today:
Pre-Order Frenzy: Just an hour after Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL[3]) began taking online orders for the iPhone 5 this morning, the first batch of the new smartphones sold out[4], the Washington Post notes. Orders placed through Apple’s web store now post a two week shipping estimate. Apple’s newest smartphone was unveiled by CEO Tim Cook at a media event on Wednesday. The super-quick sell-out suggests that demand for the newest iPhone is very strong and that Apple is on track to deliver the biggest product rollout in its history. Apple shares rose 2% in Friday afternoon trading. The iPhone 5 arrives in brick and mortar stores on September 21.
Under the Hood: The materials that comprise[5] the 16GB iPhone 5 cost Apple $167.50, according to UBM TechInsights. Consumers can purchase the 16GB model for $199 with a two year contract from a wireless provider, or $649 without a contract. The A6 chip is the costliest component at $28, the 4G LTE modem costs $25, while the 4-inch display is estimated to cost $18. The prices of individual components do not take into account R&D costs, overhead or assembly charges. By contrast, the components for the 16GB iPhone 4S are estimated to cost $132 per phone.
Happy iPad Owners: A survey of tablet computer owners by J.D. Power and Associates finds that iPad owners are the most satisfied with their devices[6], AppleInsider notes. The iPad scored highest in terms of styling and design, performance, features and ease of operation, receiving a score of 848 out of a possible 1,000 points. The industry average for tablet computers was a score of 832. Amazon‘s (NASDAQ:AMZN[7]) Kindle Fire came in second with a score of 841 and was most cited for its price. Samsung’s tablets scored 827, while Barnes & Noble’s (NYSE:BKS[8]) Nook received a score of 803.
