Nokia in Hot Water Over Misleading Lumia Ads

Video, photos in spot for new phone taken with handheld camera

Nokia (NYSE:NOK) apologized for a second time Saturday after admitting that still photography used in commercials for its Lumia 920 weren’t taken with the phone.

The mea culpa followed last week’s confession that video portions of the ad, ostensibly taken by the Lumia 920′s PureView camera, actually were shot with a handheld video camera and lighting rig.

The allegedly misleading material, exposed by the blogosphere, might discredit Nokia’s attempt to position its smartphones as technologically superior to its market dominating rivals. Nokia’s introduction of the Windows 8-powered Lumia 920 Wednesday followed Samsung showing off its Windows 8-compatible ATIV S to reporters in late August. Additionally, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is expected to debut its new iPhone this Wednesday.

The video in question was “produced when the Nokia Lumia 920 was in preproduction,” the company explained in its statement. “While there was no intention to mislead, the failure to add a disclaimer to the video was obviously a mistake, and we apologize for the misunderstanding it did cause.”
