Toys ‘R’ Us to Hire 45,000 This Holiday

There will be more seasonal workers at Toys ‘R’ Us during the Christmas shopping season this year[1], compared to last.

The toy and game retailer announced on Tuesday that it plans to hire 45,000 temporary workers during the upcoming holiday shopping season.

Last year, the company hired 40,000 seasonal workers. The almost 13% increase this year suggests that the retailer foresees a rise in consumer spending for the holidays, Reuters noted.

After the 2011 holiday season, the retailer kept about 15% of its seasonal hires working at its stores.

Toys ‘R’ Us joins a number of other retailers who are boosting their season hires as the holiday shopping season approaches.

Last week, Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT[2]) said that it will hire 50,000 seasonal workers, slight more than last year. While, clothing retailer Kohl’s (NYSE:KSS[3]) announced plans to increase its seasonal hires[4] to 52,700 workers, up 10% from last year.

Despite lingering high unemployment and lagging economic growth, consumers appear to be feeling more confident about the economy[5], according to recent data.

While Toys ‘R’ Us, Wal-Mart and Kohl’s are boosting their seasonal hires, discount retailer Target (NYSE:TGT[6]) said it will hire between 80,000 and 90,000 workers this holiday season, less than the 92,000 it retained last year.
