Tuesday Apple Rumors: iPhone 5 Debuts Next Week

It’s Official: Today Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL[2]) dispatched email invitations to journalists for an event[3] on Sept. 12, CNN notes. While the invitations didn’t indicate exactly what the company would be showing off next week, Apple is widely expected to debut the next-generation iPhone at the event. The tagline to the invitations said “it’s almost here.” Analysts noted that in the image included with the invitation, the number 5 can be seen in the shadow of the event’s date, suggesting to some that the new phone will be officially called the iPhone 5. Rumors have circulated for more than a month that Apple would unveil the new phone on Sept. 12. The new iPhone is expected to his store shelves on Sept. 21. Apple is also widely expected to debut a smaller-screen iPad in early October and, possibly, updated iPods and iMacs.

An August Eclipse: With the next-gen iPhone about to make its debut, an analyst at Canaccord Genuity says sales of the rival Samsung Galaxy III topped the iPhone 4S last month[4], making it the most popular phone in the U.S., CNET said. If the analysis is correct, it will be the first time that the iPhone 4S hasn’t been the country’s best-selling smartphone since its debut. Samsung’s gains are largely seen as the result of potential iPhone buyers delaying purchases as rumors and media coverage of the upcoming release of the new phone escalated. Once it is launched, Apple is expected to be back on top of U.S. smartphone sales. The analyst also noted continuing declines for phones from Nokia (NYSE:NOK[5]) and Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM[6]).

PC Twilight in the Classroom: A study finds that traditional desktop computers are being driven from schools[7] by the success of Apple’s iPad, AppleInsider notes. An analyst with Needham & Co. says last quarter’s PC shipments to educational institutions fell to 265,000 units, down 13.9% compared to 2011. At the same time, almost 1 million iPads were sold to the education sector. That was twice the same-sector sales for the iPad over last year. The iPad is now outselling Macs almost two-to-one in the education sector. Terming these sales the “canary in the coal mine,” the analyst predicted that iPad sales would soon begin eroding PC sales in the home and business markets.
