iOS Success: Speaking at the California media event debuting the latest iPhone today, Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) CEO Tim Cook said that the company has sold more than 400 million iOS-based devices since 2007, Engadget reports. At the event, the company unveiled the its next-generation iPhone, featuring a widely-expected 4-inch screen, a faster dual-core A6 processor, 8MP camera, 4G LTE capability and iOS 6. The new iPhone 5 is said to be 20% lighter and 18mm thinner than the iPhone 4S. The company had reported 365 million iOS devices sold as of its Worldwide Developers Conference back in June. By contrast, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) officials have said recently that 500 million Android-based devices have been activated.

iPad in the Air: Pilots at American Airlines will begin using iPads to replace paperbound charts and manuals in all phases of certain flights this month, AppleInsider reports. The iPad has been approved as an Electronic Flight Bag by the FAA, meaning it can replace the traditional bound flight charts and aircraft manuals normally carried along with each flight. Paper flight bags can weigh as much as 35 pounds. The iPads have been cleared for use on the airline’s Boeing (NYSE:BA) 777 jets and are expected to save $1.2 million annually in fuel costs through reduced weight. The airline first received FAA clearance to use iPads as Electronic Flight Bags back in 2011. The iPad remains the only tablet PC to receive FAA clearance.

Another Departure: One of the co-creators of Apple’s voice assistant Siri has left the company, Bloomberg reports. Adam Cheyer served as co-founder and vice president of engineering at Siri prior to Apple acquiring the company and adding the service to its iPhone 4S. Cheyer is the second high-level Siri team member to depart since Apple acquired to service in April 2010. Former Siri CEO Dag Kittlaus left Apple in 2011. The company is partnering with automotive manufacturers, including Toyota (NYSE:TM) and General Motors (NYSE:GM), to bring the voice-service to cars. AllThingsD reports that Cheyer left in June to “pursue other projects.”
