Starbucks (NASDAQ:SBUX) may have its answer to Subway’s Jared Fogle, the man who lost 245 pounds in a year purportedly by eating its sandwiches every day.
Christine Hall says she shed 85 pounds, falling from a total weight of 195 pounds to just 114 pounds, by eating only pre-packaged food she purchased at the coffee house chain, consulting the calorie information on the packaging to keep total calorie intake down, NBC News notes.
According to Hall, she has accelerated her weight loss by sticking to a diet with a very low calorie count – sometimes as low as 876 calories a day.
Hall began her weight-loss journey after a doctor rejected her attempt to become a kidney donor and warned her about her weight. At the time, the 5-foot, 4-inch Hall weighed about 200 pounds.
Spurred by the doctor’s advice, she created an online food diary and began tracking her calorie intake. After falling to 190, she realized it was more convenient to purchase pre-packaged food at Starbucks, which has a location close to the law office where she works as a librarian.
Dozens of pounds lighter now, Hall says she has left behind the sleep apnea, fatigue and joint pain that she felt while she was obese and intends to maintain her current weight and health.
Physicians warn that extreme low-calorie diets can lead to malnutrition in addition to weight loss. They suggest a more balanced, if slower, approach.
