HP No Longer World’s Top PC Maker?

It’s been a long run at the top for Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:HPQ[1]). But the run might be over.

Depending on which research firm you believe Lenovo (PINK:LNVGY[2]) might have passed HP as the leading shipper of PCs in the world.

Research firm Gartner now estimates that Lenovo held a 15.7% market share of the global PC market in the third quarter, while HP held a just-behind 15.5%, reports the Associated Press[3]. However, Interactive Data flipped the rankings, giving HP a 15.9% share and Lenovo 15.7%. Dell (NASDAQ:DELL[4]) and Acer were in third and fourth place, respectively. Either way, Lenovo has closed the gap between it and Hewlett-Packard over the past few years.

Both Gartner and IDC have HPQ leading within the U.S. market.

Still, the bragging rights are less lustrous amid a difficult 2012 for the PC market. Both research firms say PC shipments fell more than 8% in the third quarter. A third firm, iHS iSuppli, says the world will see its first annual decline in PC shipments in 11 years.
