Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:
Two Debuts: At a special media event next week, Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will unveil a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro in addition to its much-anticipated iPad Mini, CBS News notes. The new Retina MacBook Pro has been expected since the company debuted a 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro earlier this year. The newest Retina MacBook Pro is expected to feature a 13.3-inch display with 2,500 x 1,600 pixel resolution. It will likely be priced well below the $2,199 base price for the 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro. Previous reports indicated that the media event announcing the iPad Mini would occur this week. Reports have also surfaced citing delays in iPad Mini production due to technical issues including problems making touchscreens with thinner bezels and easily scratched rear casing materials. Invitations for the October 23 event are expected to be mailed to media sources starting this week.
Slimmer Profile: Reports from Asian component makers indicate that Apple is preparing to launch an updated line of iMacs that will be thinner than current models, AppleInsider notes. The new iMacs will also feature a redesigned case, shedding the squared-off edges in favor of a curved, teardrop appearance. While new iMacs are expected to come with the latest microprocessors and high-speed connections, Retina displays are not expected on new models. Apple has reportedly adopted a new screen lamination process for the iMacs that has complicated manufacturing of the 27-inch iMacs, meaning that the company will mostly likely debut the 21.5-inch model first, with the 27-inch unit following when production issues have been resolved.
Partner Shift: A Citigroup (NYSE:C) analyst says that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM) will become Apple’s sole producer of quad-core computer chips by 2014, China Economic News Service notes. Apple has been reviewing TSM’s 20nm chip manufacturing process for some months, after deciding to adopt 20nm quad-core chips for upcoming iPads, MacBooks and iTV products. Apple has also reportedly been looking to reduce its chip supply reliance on mobile device rival Samsung.
