Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:
Slower Sale: The first batch of the black-and-slate 16GB WiFi-only model of Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) new iPad Mini took 35 hours to sell out, AppleInsider notes. It took more than a full day longer for the dark version of the iPad Mini to sell out its initial inventory, compared to the white iPad Mini, which sold out its first batch within an hour after pre-ordering began on Friday morning. The company’s website now reports a two-week wait for shipping on both iPad Minis. The iPad Mini is meant to compete with 7-inch tablets from Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Samsung. Shipping for iPad Minis featuring both WiFi and cellular connections won’t start until mid-November, according to Apple.
High-Tech Light: Another product will hit Apple Store shelves this week. But it won’t be a new tablet, computer or smartphone. Instead Apple Stores will begin retailing Philips’ new “Hue” line of smart lightbulbs, Next Web notes. The LED light bulbs can communicate wirelessly, receiving instructions from smartphones and tablets. Owners can change the lighting patterns in their home even if they aren’t there, triggering individual light bulbs to turn and and off using Hue apps for smartphones and tablets. A starter pack, priced at $199, includes three 50-watt lightbulbs and a device that lets them connect to wireless routers. The Hue system can manage up to 50 smart lightbulbs at once. The new bulbs, which use 80% less electricity compared to incandescent bulbs, arrive at Apple Stores on Oct. 30.
Venus Launches: The super-yacht that Steve Jobs spent years designing in collaboration with French designer Philippe Starck has launched, almost exactly one year after his death, Fox News notes. The 250-foot Venus, built in the Netherlands, features an aluminum hull and 10-foot high specially made glass windows. Guests can relax in 40-foot long cabins and enjoy a jacuzzi. The boat’s internal systems are run via a cluster of 27-inch iMacs in the wheelhouse. Workers who helped build the ship received thank-you notes from the Jobs family, as well as iPod Shuffles engraved with the yacht’s name.
