Actress Daryl Hannah was arrested yesterday in Winnsboro, Texas, while protesting the Keystone XL pipeline. Hannah faces charges of criminal trespass for standing in front of some heavy equipment and refusing to move.
Also arrested with Hannah was Eleanor Fairchild, a 78-year-old from Winnsboro, reported The Dallas Morning News. Fairchild owns land in Winnsboro that the pipeline will cross. Reports Thursday evening indicated that both women would be jailed overnight.
The Keystone XL, owned by TransCanada (NYSE:TRP), has been a focus of controversy for the last several years with both protests and congressional actions focusing on the pipeline that will bring oil from Canada to refineries in Texas.
It’s the second time that the actress, star of such movies as Splash and Clan of the Cave Bear, has been arrested while protesting the pipeline. In August 2011, she was arrested in Washington State along with several hundred other people.
Protesters claim the pipeline presents a significant environmental risk due to the nature of the tar-sands oil that will be transported. A TransCanada spokesman counters that the pipeline will be the safest ever built.
