Walmart Sold an iPad Box With a Surprise Inside

“Tablet” can apparently have two meanings. In the modern sense it refers to handheld computers such as Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad or Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle. But the more traditional definition nearly ruined a Texas teen’s birthday.

Bobbi Linden, of Sealy, Texas, knew her daughter Courtney wanted an iPad for her birthday. Unfortunately, when Courtney, now 15, opened the box, she got quite a surprise — it was filled with a stack of notepads instead of the much-desired device, according to The Huffington Post.

At the Walmart (NYSE:WMT) store where she had purchased the iPad, Bobbi was told by the manager that the store wouldn’t accept the return. After Bobbi and Courtney contacted a local television station, the company performed a trace on the package and agreed to provide a free iPad … and an apology.

Similar scams have popped up at big box stores in the past. Thieves will purchase an expensive item, replace it in the box with something else and then return it resealed to stores.

More large companies apologizing:
