Here are your Apple rumors and AAPL news items for today:
Limited Connectivity: The much-anticipated smaller-screen iPad from Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will only feature Wi-Fi connectivity, the Guardian says. By ditching 3G connectivity, Apple will be able to keep the iPad Mini’s price low enough to compete successfully with 7-inch tablets from Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Samsung. In order to make the iPad Mini attractive for consumers, it cannot be priced above $250, analysts estimate. According to the Guardian, Apple will also shortly introduce an upgraded full-sized iPad featuring 4G connectivity. Apple has neither confirmed nor denied the existence of the iPad Mini, but analysts expect it to be unveiled later this month. Recent reports indicate that Apple has ordered its Asian partners to manufacture 10 million iPad Minis in time for the holiday shopping season.
Word on iOS: Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) will release apps bringing its popular Office Suite to mobile devices running iOS and Google’s Android early next year, ZDNet notes. The debut of office on iOS has been expected for months. The latest reports say that the apps will be released first to business customers and Microsoft partners in December, before becoming available to the public in February. Microsoft has officially confirmed that it is planning to release Office apps for iOS, Android and — naturally — Windows-based mobile devices, but has not disclosed a launch date.
No Sale: An original Apple-1 computer hand-built by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak failed to sell at Christie’s auction house in London, The Sun said. The handmade computer, which features 4 kilobytes of memory and retailed for $666.66 when it first sold almost four decades ago, failed to meet its reserve price of £50,000. The top bid received during the auction was for £32,000. Only 200 Apple-1’s were sold before the fledgling company cancelled the model in 1977. Auction experts had expected the machine to sell for between £50,000 and £80,000. Almost two years ago, an Apple-1 fetched £133,250 at a Christie’s auction in London.
