When you think Michael Bloomberg, you think New York. After all, he’s the mayor of the Big Apple, and before that he built the Bloomberg empire sitting in Manhattan today. But did you know he’s the richest man in the state?

As consulting group Wealth-X has found in a state-by-state look at the nation’s wealthiest individuals, Bloomberg and much of the rest of America’s ultra high-net worth population often lives close to the companies they founded. Think Washington-based Microsoft‘s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Bill Gates or Omaha, Neb.-based Berkshire Hathaway‘s (NYSE:BRK.B) Warren Buffett.
