The company, which introduced its updated Kindle Fire HD this year, has consistently failed to reveal concrete sales data for its tablets, leading to considerable speculation about the actual numbers.

Despite Amazon’s claims that Kindle tablet comprise as much as 22% of all tablet sales, a report by IBM found that 88% of holiday weekend online shopping traffic came from shoppers using Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPads. Shopping traffic from Kindles came in third, behind traffic from Barnes & Noble‘s (NYSE:BKS) Nook tablets.

In addition to the Kindle HD, Amazon launched a variety of new tablets this year, including the Kindle Paperwhite, a dedicated e-reader, and larger-screen Kindle Fire HDs, meant to compete with the iPad and other tablets running operating systems from Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Google (NASDAQ:GOOG).

Shares of Amazon rose about 1% in Tuesday midday trading.
