Earlier this year, Apple dumped Google‘s (NASDAQ:GOOG) long-established mapping software from iOS, replacing it with an internally developed maps application. Reports indicate that Google’s refusal to offer voice-guided turn-by-turn directions, a key selling point for mobile devices, on iOS was the prime motivation for the move.

However, Apple’s new maps app was greeted by a barrage of criticism from users who quickly discovered various glitches and cartographic mistakes in the program. Complaints about the app threatened to mar the launch of the iPhone 5, leading Apple CEO Tim Cook to issue a rare apology in September.

Last month, the head of Apple’s mobile software unit, Scott Forstall, was forced out, in part because of problems with the maps app. Cue assumed responsibility for the mapping program in October and is reportedly moving to improve the application, even as Google is said to be putting the finishing touches on its own iOS maps app, which will eventually be submitted to Apple’s Apps Store.

Shares of Apple fell almost 1% in Wednesday morning trading.
