Internet users were fascinated by hurricanes, politics, celebrities and high-tech devices during 2012.
Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) reviewed the billions of search requests processed by its Bing search engine to compile a list of the top news stories web users looked for this year.
Not surprisingly, the presidential election came out near the top of the list, as did Hurricane Sandy, which slammed coastal New York, New Jersey and Connecticut in October. Pint-sized reality TV personality Honey Boo Boo also made the list, as did South Korean musician PSY’s hit single Gangnam Style.
But topping the list of most searched news stories was the launch of Apple‘s (NASDAQ:AAPL) much-anticipated iPhone 5. Amazon‘s (NASDAQ:AMZN) Kindle Fire HD tablet, which launched this year made a lower-ranked appearance. So did Facebook (NASDAQ:FB), which went public in May.
