The new headquarters will feature a circular design that has been described as resembling a spaceship. In its original plan, Apple had planned to break ground on the new building next year and begin moving in by 2015, Bloomberg noted.

However, the company has experienced delays in compiling the environmental impact report necessary to obtain approval from the city. That report may be delayed until June, pushing the start of construction to 2014.

City officials noted that the project was “running a little slow” and said work could begin on the shiny, ultramodern structure next year, but only if the approval process went briskly and no challenges were filed by city residents.

Apple submitted its final design plans to Cupertino just four months before the death of founder and CEO Steve Jobs. More than 14,000 employees will ultimately work at the 176-acre campus. The designs feature underground garages sufficient to hold 10,500 cars.
